Another Hopkins Win - Thank You!
Advocacy works! Last week, Council did not pass Councilmember Hahn’s proposal to delay and "reconsider" safety improvements on Hopkins from McGee to Gilman. Instead, Council unanimously approved a different proposal that the City Manager offered on the day of the meeting. The City Manager's item commits to studying parking and mode of access in the commercial area and reporting findings to Council by the end of January 2023. This means that the conceptual designs Council approved in May will continue to move forward. And, as the Mayor noted during the meeting, the next action Council will take on Hopkins will be for a construction/paving contract.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped defend this project! Hundreds of people wrote Council letters and dozens commented at the Council meeting in support of moving forward with the approved designs. Your actions mattered.
But, we still have more to do. Later this year staff will hold community meetings about extending pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Hopkins to the west, from Gilman to Kains. We’ll need to show up for safety, climate action, and equity at those meetings.
