WALK BIKE BERKELEY is an all-volunteer organization that advocates for safe, low-stress, and fun walking and biking in Berkeley for people of all ages and abilities.
We want a healthy, equitable, and sustainable transportation system in Berkeley.
Join us to make an impact on policies, plans, and projects that affect walking and biking (while having fun).
Current priorities
Passing Measure FF, the SAFE STREETS measure, to fund smoother, safer, streets across Berkeley.
Ensuring the City’s Public Works Department is staffed and supported to deliver projects that improve walking and biking in Berkeley.
Pedestrianizing part of Center Street downtown, strengthening the City’s Bicycle Plan, and making Telegraph and Adeline complete streets.
Implementing the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate all fatal and serious collisions on Berkeley streets by 2028.
Advancing BerkDOT, an equity-focused, engineering-first vision of self-enforcing streets with limited need for police involvement.
Updates
On Saturday, March 11th at 2pm, a group of kids, parents, and caregivers will ride together to show support for bike lanes on Hopkins Street.
Berkeley’s City Council approved an exciting plan to bring safety and mobility choices to all along eastern Hopkins Street and is considering extending it to western Hopkins! In May 2022, they approved safety improvements to the eastern segment, from Sutter Street to Gilman Street, and reaffirmed these plans in October 2022. In April 2023, they will consider how far west of GIlman to extend the improvements. We want them to go to Kains St - as far as possible. We need your help to make sure they stand strong on the eastern segment and extend the project to the western end of Hopkins.
We’ve worked with Councilmember Robinson to develop a first-in-the-nation proposal to transfer police traffic duties to unarmed civilians in a new equity-focused Berkeley Department of Transportation (BerkDOT). Email City Council by July 14 to support de-policing transportation!
Berkeley will not be a safe place to walk and bike until EVERYONE can move through our public space without fearing racial violence and harassment from police and others.
